First Quarter Animal Science

Moving to Cal Poly from Orange County, California was a huge change for me. Moving from a large city area, to a small college town has it's ups and downs every now and then, but I never regret my decision. I have always aspired to be a veterinarian my whole life (and hopefully I am capable of following my dream and surviving organic chemistry), so I needed to attend a large agricultural school. Cal Poly was the best decision I could have ever made. Cal Poly offers so many hands on experiences and classes that a city girl like me needed.

Before moving to Cal Poly, my only interaction with animals was with cats and dogs. I have always been fascinated with farm animals, but I never knew I would be exposed to them my first quarter freshman year! During my first Animal Science 101 class I was very eager to start working with animals, and I was on the look out for any opportunity. I was shocked to find out that many of the enterprises were available for freshman, so I applied to all the ones that interested me.

In the end, I chose the goat enterprise, which has become my favorite class. The enterprise consists of both lecture and lab, so we are learning about the different breeds of goats, vegetation management, and even about California native plants, as well as caring for the goats on campus. Of course, I learned the basics of handling and caring for goats, and I have a new appreciation for them. Majoring in animal science was the best decision I have ever made; I am able to be out with animals a few times a week and be reminded of my dream to be a veterinarian everyday. By gaining the hands on experience I am motivated that my reward after the many years of undergrad and vet school will be worth it.
